About Tungsten

About Tungsten

Tungsten has been around for many used but has been more commonly used in the manufacturing industry for tools and machinery.  It was useful for many reasons, but mostly for its excessive hardness.  When measuring the hardness of Tungsten on the Mohr’s hardness scale, Tungsten measures 8 on a 1-10 scale, with 10 being the hardest.  Tungsten didn’t make its debut into the jewelry industry until only about 10 years ago, but has quickly become both a popular and practical option.

Tungsten is the best selling Contemporary Metal on Wedding Bands Galleria.  It is branded for its scratch resistant nature.  Tungsten rings can only be scratched under extreme measures, such as with diamond composite.  This means that even those with the most active lifestyles can have a ring that stays looking new for many years to come.  Tungsten is substantially heavier in weight, and is naturally a deep gray color.  Tungsten is a great option to anyone that is concerned about allergic reactions, as it is hypoallergenic.  With so many fantastic characteristics, you may be surprised to learn that Tungsten is one of our most affordable options.  As you search our beautiful collection you will quickly see why Tungsten is such a popular choice for a wedding band.

As with each alloy, Tungsten has its limiting assets too.  Let’s discuss those of Tungsten.  Because Tungsten is so hard, it cannot be resized.  Fortunately, all tungsten rings at Wedding Bands Galleria include a Lifetime Warranty which would enable you to exchange your band for a new size if needed somewhere in the future.  Although Tungsten is extremely hard, it is a bit more brittle in comparison to other metals.  If you dropped a Tungsten ring at just the right angle, it could potentially break.  This is highly unlikely, and we have only seen a few cases in our many years.  However, if such an event occurred it would be covered by our wonderful Lifetime Warranty.

When people hear about our tough Tungsten rings, many people ask a great question:  Can a Tungsten ring be cut off during an emergency?  The answer is yes.  Tungsten rings are removed differently than other wedding bands, but virtually all hospitals and jewelry shops are equipped to handle the removal of a Tungsten ring.  As we mentioned earlier, Tungsten is more brittle than other metals.  To remove a tungsten band during an emergency, vice grip pliers are clamped in multiple places around the ring until the ring breaks into 2 pieces and is safely removed from the finger.

Engraving a Tungsten Wedding Band

Many people wonder, if it is virtually impossible to scratch a Tungsten ring, how can you put an etch engraving on a Tungsten ring?  Well, you can’t!  This goes to show you how amazingly tough these Tungsten rings are!  Fortunately, here at Wedding Bands Galleria we have state of the art Laser Engraving Services which enable you to still engrave a Tungsten Wedding Band.  Many online jewelers charge $40 or more for their Laser Engraving Services, but here we only charge $20!  Our state of the art machinery allows you to inscribe your personal message in any font offered through Microsoft Word.  Although we do not have a character limit on laser engravings, we generally suggest staying around 30 characters including spaces to ensure the best possible look.  Engraving adds a personal touch to this special purchase, and many customers choose to add names, dates, nicknames, and inside sayings.  To personalize your band simply add engraving when ordering your band and choose “Laser Engraving”.  You will be prompted to type in your engraving request thereafter.
